Cardiac flow solutions for medical

device development and testing

Our Services

Consulting

You need to test your cardiovascular medical device under relevant physiological conditions? We can help you with testing of your medical device for research and development, and to meet pre-clinical regulatory requirements.

Testbench and equipment

Get your own AvaFlow solution(s), customized to your specific needs. Our testbenches are compact, adaptable and easy to use, and will allow you to test your cardiovascular device in-house to enhance your device development.

Medical device testing

Rent our system (including system expert if needed) adapted to your needs, or let us perform the tests for you. Our system can also be rented and used in the specialized labs of our partner's to enable specific testing needs.

Who we are

AvaFlow is a spin-off company of the University of Bern, created in May 2025 by Silje Ekroll Jahren (CEO) and Dominik Obrist (scientific advisor). We have experienced that cardiac flow can be hard to assess, and that there is a need for medical device testing solutions for companies to meet regulatory requirments, and to reduce costs and time-to-market.

Our versatile cardiac flow loops have been developed over more than 10 years including translational projects with clinical and medical partners leading to more than 30 publications. It is also a solution to reduce animal experimentation.

Partners

ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research

AvaFlow collaborates with the Cardiovascular Engineering (CVE) Group and the Mechanical Design and Production (MDP) Group of the ARTORG Center from the University of Bern. The CVE group is a partner for equipment and testing facilities with a fully equipped flow laboratorium and several models of AvaFlow cardiac flow solutions.

The MDP support us in the design and manufacturing process, from idea to production, of our custom-made flow solutions including computer assisted design (CAD) modeling, CNC-milling and CNC-lathe machines. The CVE and the MDP are located in the sitem-insel building in Bern, Switzerland.

UniBE startup

AvaFlow is a spartup originating from the University of Bern (Switzerland), and our cardiac flow solutions have been developed during more than 10 years of research and innovation at the ARTORG Center.

sitem-insel Clinical Anatomy Training and Research (CATR)

AvaFlow collaborates with the sitem-insel CATR unit, which is a state-of-the-art wetlab, committed to delivering high-quality surgical training and development of medical devices in partnership with industry and academia. Together with sitem-insel CATR we can deliver e.g., perfusion solutions to cadaver models and ex-vivo experiments for cardiac device development and pre-clinical testing or cardiac flow for surgical training. The sitem-insel CATR unit is located in the sitem-insel building in Bern, Switzerland.
